Substitute Teacher Certification Now Faster & Easier

With a severe need for substitute teachers across the state of Missouri, the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education has approved a new process for the certification of substitute teachers.  Individuals wishing to become substitute teachers will be allowed to take a 20-hour DESE-approved online course.  The 20-hour online course covers topics such as professionalism, honoring diversity, engaging students, foundational classroom management techniques, basic instructional strategies, supporting students with special needs and working with at-risk youth.   This online course is being offered for those wishing to become substitute teachers but cannot meet the current requirement of  36 semester hours or more of college-level credit from a DESE-recognized and accredited college or university.

To view the substitute certification process you may click here to view the information from the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.  To begin the online course process you may click here to be directed to Frontline Education.

Former or retired teaches who still hold valid Missouri teaching certificates no longer have to obtain a substitute teaching certification.  You can learn more at the DESE website here.
